LOS QUETZALES AND HIGHLAND BIRDING EXPEDITION
Come explore the highlands of Costa Rica and see some of the most beautiful birds in the world! Led by a local expert and your bilingual guide you will spot the famous Quetzal bird as you make your way through Costa Rica's newest national park.
HIKE THE HIGHLANDS & OBSERVE THE INCREDIBLE QUETZALES

The always elusive Quetzal spends most of his life migrating looking for his favorite meal – wild avocados fruits – among other species. On our highland birding expedition, we will meet with a local expert who knows when and where the Quetzals are any time of the year. As we explore Los Quetzales National Park – one can see the ways the surrounding villages have respected this magnificent place.
Our guides will pick you up from your accommodation at 4:00am, our first stop will be San Isidro del General (one and half hour drive away) to drink coffee and have quick snack. Our day starts bright and early as the best time to reach Los Quetzales National Park is before 7:00am. We want you to have the best opportunities to observe and photograph this unique, beautiful bird.
Once we’re finished we will drive or walk back to Mirador los Quetzales Sanctuary for more birdwatching and some hummingbird feeders action. Before we start our journey back to sea level, we will stop for a late breakfast or early lunch at the iconic Los Chespiritos restaurant. Here you’ll have the chance to taste our delicious fresh products.
We’re always flexible during our journey back to town. Your guide will suggest some places to visit before reaching Quepos – leaving you and the group to decide where you want to stop next! Some possible stops include: The Borucan Indigenous Reserve where you can buy authentic, handcrafted goods, Marino Ballena National Park where we can walk the famous whale’s tail sandbar if the tide is in our favor or Dominical Surf Beach where we can enjoy the surf atmosphere, local souvenir shopping or drink a nice cocktail on the beach.
